Been reading up and asking a few people about smoke beers. Rauchbier and smoked porter are the most common styles in homebrewing circles that I’ve seen. Another style that I’ve decided to try is piwo grodziskie. It’s a Polish style made from wheat malt with oak smoke. It’s light colored, low gravity, low alcohol, and highly carbonated. It seems like a better summer style than the märzen-like rauchbier.
However since I can’t get hold of oak-smoked wheat malt at the moment, I’m going to try smoking some wheat malt myself which adds a some wild variability, so who knows how that will turn out. Should be a fun experiment though.
I’ve also had some thoughts on oscillation/seasonal changes in life, and telling whether I’m falling back into a rut or oscillating in a positive way (entering a season of _____ again with more experience and skill). Whether I can tell the difference without hindsight. Those are thoughts I want to explore more later.
